Study Description:

The Health & Aging Brain among Latino Elders (HABLE) study is a newly created research project designed to investigate cognitive aging among Latino elders, primarily Mexican Americans. The study utilizes a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach in Ft. Worth and surrounding community of Tarrant County, Texas. Topics being investigated include, but are not limited to, biomarkers of cognitive dysfunction, depression-related cognitive dysfunction, the impact of metabolic factors on cognitive abilities, and cognitive correlates of environmental contaminants.

Subjects:

Initial wave of recruitment is ongoing with the goal of 500 participants by 2014. It is anticipated that there will be 75-100 MCI cases, 50-75 AD (possible and probable), 20-30 cases of other dementias (primarily vascular), and the remaining will be cognitively normal at baseline. The project is designed to have annual follow-up examinations.

Collection and Storage Methods:

Fasting am blood draw with 21 gage needle. Serum separating (tiger top) and BD EDTA (K2, purple top) and supn at 1300xg for 10min. Total processing time is less than 2hrs with processing started within 1 hour of collection. Samples are immediately stored in -80 freezer until assay. Additional information available from investigators.

Other Measurements available for this cohort:

Other data available on research participants include neuropsychological testing, water arsenic levels (on subsample), clinical labs, residential history (subset), physical and mental activity, diabetes management information, all current medications, along with other data elements.
